SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A Sumter woman has been arrested in connection with a motel fire, say deputies.
Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was patrolling Broad Street on Nov. 9, when the deputy noticed flames at a door of a motel room.
The deputy notified dispatch and emergency vehicles were en-route to the scene around 8:53 p.m., according to SCSO.
Then, the deputy assisted the occupant of the room, Deanna Lynn Whitley away from the room as it was soon fully involved with flames.
Another deputy alerted the other occupants of the motel and had them evacuate their rooms.
An investigator at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office interviewed Whitley while SCSO arson investigators began their work at the scene.
Investigators say information provided by Whitley and the evidence found at the scene by arson investigators led to her being arrested for second-degree arson.
Whitley was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and given a $15,000 surety bond.
