Courtesy: Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue According to AVSAR, on Oct. 31, its crews along with Saguache County Search and Rescue (SAGSAR) and Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (GRSA), were called to assist in the search for an overdue hunter, who had not been seen since the evening of Oct. 30. According to rescue crews, the hunters were in the area of Saguache County near Sand Creek, which is on the northern side of the national park, and when the man did not return to camp the next morning on Oct. 31, "the hunting party triggered the SOS feature on their Garmin Satellite device." The man's brother also went out hiking to look for him and later contacted rescue crews that his brother, identified as Lance Walker of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was found dead in an area of rough terrain. "A unified command was created with SAGSAR, AVSAR, and the National Park Service (NPS)," according to the Facebook post shared on Nov. 14. "Over 20 team members from three teams (Saguache, Alamosa, and Chaffee South) responded to the incident." According to rescue crews, recovery efforts would not be successful until the next day because it was dark outside and the area was very technical terrain. Due to the high winds in Montrose, however, its crews were unable to assist. "After four lowers and two raises with technical rope rescue equipment, the seven team members carried the subject to an upper Landing Zone where DFPC Flat Iron Helitack flew the subject out to the incident command post," the post read. "The Unified Command of the incident (GRSA, AVSAR, Chaffee County Search and Rescue – South (CCSAR-S), and SAGSAR) would like to send our deepest condolences to the family of Lance Walker," crews wrote. "We cannot thank enough all the responding teams and assets for their help in getting this man home to his family after such a tragic accident."
