COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) - November is National Veteran and Military Families month and two state agencies are teaming up to help connect veterans to potential employers. The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce and the South Carolina Department of Veteran Affairs have 14 veteran job fairs for the month of November. According to SCDEW Executive Director William Floyd, the goal is to introduce veterans to more than 40 organizations from across the state. "We have 400,000 veterans in South Carolina and our job and our opportunity is to connect more of them with the workforce," Floyd explained. "So it's great what they have already done and we hope they will do even more by working with one of our employers here in South Carolina." Veteran Jimmy Townsend attend the job fair. He said the state does a lot for veterans, and job fairs go a long way towards connecting veterans with employers. "We're doing 20, 30 some people 35 years in the military and then transferring over to the civilian side can be very very difficult and very jarring for us," Townsend said. "Providing these opportunities for us, providing these jobs and providing other assets that create better transitions for us goes a long way with us, and it lets us know that South Carolina really cares about us." SCDVA Secretary Todd McCaffrey said veterans have specific skills that stand out to employers. "Veterans bring three things to any work force," McCaffrey said. "Number 1: they are inheritably disciplined because of their military service. Second: they know how to work on a team. Third: through their military service they have demonstrated the ability to be trained on skills they did not have before they entered that particular profession." Townsend agreed, adding that he knows the benefits that military men and women can bring to a company. "We're motivated starting there, we're also very very consistent," Townsend elaborated. "What it takes to get hard work done. We're very regimented. We know about getting up early, going to bed late. Doing our job until there's nothing left." Interested in stopping by a job fair?
