Louisiana Senate OKs proposed amendment that could send kids, teens to adult court for 'any crime'
Nov 14, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Louisiana Senate approved a proposed constitutional amendment that could send young teens to adult court. It has to be approved by the House during this special session before being put before voters.
During the Louisiana Legislature's 2024 Third Extraordinary Session, state Sen. Heather Cloud introduced Senate Bill 2, which is related to the sentencing of a juvenile convicted of committing a crime.
According to the Legislature, present law reportedly tries juveniles as adults who were convicted of first- and second-degree murder, manslaughter, aggravated rape, armed robbery, aggravated burglary, aggravated kidnapping, attempted first- and second-degree murder, forcible rape, simple rape, second-degree kidnapping and manufacturing/distribution/possession with the intent to distribute CDS.
If this amendment is passed, the proposed law would remove the listed crimes and let children and teens be tried in adult court for "any crime provided by law" instead of using special guidelines for juveniles.
Two-thirds of the Senate and House of Representatives must vote OK the amendment. After, Louisiana voters will have the chance to approve it through a statewide election.
