BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man on Thursday was ordered to stand trial on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death last year of a man who was an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, according to court records.
A judge determined there was enough evidence for the case against 28-year-old Fredi Rivera to proceed. Rivera is also charged with violating a 10-year firearm prohibition.
Held on $1 million bail, Rivera is due back in court on Nov. 21 for a trial date to be set.
On the night of Sept. 18, 2023, Daniel Landeros and a male friend were walking through Yokuts Park when a man approached and called Landeros a gay slur, according to the friend’s statement to police.
Landeros and the man argued while the friend waited near a park bench. He heard a single gunshot then saw Landeros stumble toward him; a dark-colored SUV sped away moments later.
Landeros was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the suspect vehicle as a black 2006-07 Hummer H3, according to court filings. They linked the vehicle to Rivera and learned he was on probation for grand theft. He was arrested Oct. 4, 2023.
