Rockaway, Queens commuters to get steep LIRR discounts, free shuttle during A Train outage
Nov 14, 2024
Residents of the Rockaways in Queens will be able to ride commuter rail for cheap — and the shuttle for free — while the MTA takes the A train out of service for four months of repairs next year.
Rockaway straphangers can ride the Long Island Rail Road to and from the city for $2.75 each way — less than a $2.90 subway fare — during the outage if they purchase their tickets at the Far Rockaway station, Gov. Hochul announced Thursday.
Hochul also said the Rockaway Shuttle, which will run the length of the peninsula from Rockaway Park to Far Rockaway while the A train is down for the count, will be free, as will two shuttle buses on the peninsula.
The QM16 and QM17 express buses offering direct service to Manhattan will still cost $7 each way.
A train service to the peninsula will be suspended for four months beginning Jan. 17, as crews work to repair lingering damage from Superstorm Sandy in 2012 along the elevated line running over Broad Channel and Jamaica Bay.
The project includes the wholesale replacement of the Y-shaped junction known as the Hammels Wye viaduct and repairs to the South Channel Bridge just north of the junction, as well as a major shoring up of the four miles of subway tracks over Broad Channel and Jamaica Bay which were rebuilt following Sandy.
