WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- DC Power Football Club, “Power FC,” announced it would add former NFL player Vernon Davis to its ownership group. Davis is a Washington, D.C. native who grew up in the Petworth neighborhood, becoming one of the country's top football high school players when he graduated in 2003. In 2006, he entered the NFL draft and was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers. In 2015, he won the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos, before playing his last three NFL seasons with the Washington Commanders. The organization said Davis is "bringing with him a wealth of leadership and experience in addition to a passion for growing women’s soccer in the DMV." DC’s National Children’s Museum celebrates 50 years of play with new exhibits “Women’s soccer is on a growth trajectory unlike any other sport in this country, and the emergence of the USL Super League provides yet another crucial platform for elite players to showcase their talents and compete at a high level,” said Davis. “This is an incredible opportunity, as I look forward to helping to elevate this organization and the game.” Vernon initially wanted to join the DC Power FC ownership group with his late brother, Vontae, who passed away unexpectedly this year. “Vontae [Davis] and I were really excited about not only doing this together but doing it with a sports franchise in the city where we both grew up,” said Davis. “While moving forward emotionally with this partnership wasn’t easy, I also realized it would afford me an incredible opportunity to honor his memory and the dream we both shared.” Davis is joining an array of former and current professional athletes and celebrities in the ownership group. “I’ve had the distinct privilege of getting to know Vernon [Davis] over the past few years,” said Jordan Stuart, the Power FC President and co-owner. “He has been a pillar citizen of the DMV dating back over two decades as a high-profile athlete and through his personal community outreach programs. Vernon will be welcomed with open arms into the ownership group and provide his voice and resources to amplify the Power FC Club and manifest opportunities for creative engagement in sectors in the world of the arts that he is passionate about.”
