Generation ROC: West Irondequoit teens team up for international DECA competition

WEST IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WROC) -- Irondequoit High Schoolers Isaac Nielsen and Ben Loomis say they were committed to "learning the language of business" when they decided to pick up forensic accounting and team up to compete in a major DECA competition.
"I think solving problems is the most fun for me. I like being able to talk through problems and find solutions to things," Ben explains to News 8's Mikhaela Singleton.
The 11th grade students had the task of digitally managing a business’ invoices, customer purchases, and employee time sheets—all while trying to complete the simulation faster than anyone else in the state and the Northeast.
"For example, one of them is customers wrongly charged, so the forensic evidence we would use to see if the customers were wrongly charged would be pull up the source document of the customer invoices, and we can see if they match the set prices," Isaac details.
They watched themselves go from sixth, to fourth, and then top out at first in New York, second place in the entire North Atlantic Region, and they’ll now go on to compete again at the 2025 DECA International Career Development Conference in Florida. They say it’s frankly still sinking in.
"It’s kind of new to us that we are even going to Florida in the first place. We’re still getting there. I’m trying to make arrangements and stuff and it just seems kind of surreal," says Isaac.
"I believe I'm walking away with an edge, in the skill of forensic accounting for one and then also in having the knowledge of business as I'm moving forward," he goes on to say.
"I think the biggest thing I’ll take away from DECA is just because I don’t know what something is doesn’t mean I’m not going to be good at it, you know? Because I didn’t even know what DECA was when I first did it, and I ended up being good at it," adds Ben.
