SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The Star of India, a museum ship home-ported at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, is turning 161 years old and the public is invited to celebrate the historic occasion. The Star of India sails occasionally, often to commemorate special events. For example, in November of last year, the ship set sail around San Diego Bay to celebrate its 160th birthday. The Zoological Society of San Diego purchased and brought the ship to Southern California in the late 1920s. It was meant to be used as what would be the centerpiece of the Maritime Museum and aquarium that was being planned at the time. Now as the birthday of ship returns again, local residents and tourists alike are seemingly excited to find out that they can get a tour of the Star of India for free -- at least temporarily. Free tours are happening Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information can be found at https://sdmaritime.org/visit/the-ships/star-of-india/.
