Rain, king tides, high surf to impact Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Unsettled weather conditions will impact the San Francisco Bay Area through the weekend. Rain is set to fall across the region as high surf and coastal flood advisories were issued by the National Weather Service.
In the second round of rain for the Bay Area this week, most regions can expect up to 0.2 inches between Thursday and Friday, weather officials said. The North Bay coastal ranges are forecasted to receive up to 1 inch of rain, while areas of the Santa Cruz Mountains and North Bay valleys could see up to a quarter inch.

The National Weather Service is also advising of the potential for coastal flooding through Monday as king tide cycles return to the Bay. The agency said coastal flooding is “expected at prone low-lying coastal locations across the San Francisco Bay shoreline during peak high tide cycles.” Affected residents should take necessary precautions to protect property in the flood-prone regions.
A high surf advisory will remain in effect for the Bay Area’s Pacific coastline until 11 a.m. Saturday, NWS said. Large breaking waves up to 18 feet for northwest-facing beaches are expected. Officials also warn of an increased risk of sneaker waves and rip currents. These are “dangerous conditions for inexperienced surfers and swimmers,” officials said, and “unexpected waves may sweep people into the sea from rocks, jetties and beaches.”
On Monday, the Bay Area received the most rain so far this season, with the highest elevations seeing over an inch falling, according to NWS. Most of the region saw between a tenth of an inch to just over half an inch.
