KENPOM RANK: Princeton 87; Loyola 90
SCOUTING PRINCETON: The Tigers are 3-0 for the second consecutive season — they started 9-0 last year — and have managed to win three nail-biters. Those victories are by a combined 11 points, with two of them being decided by three points or less. Princeton has trailed in the second half in all three games, but this team knows how to win, and it’s not just the star players Xaivian Lee and Caden Pierce. Sophomore guard Dalen Davis, on his way to a breakout season, scored a career-high 25 points, senior guard Blake Peters knocked down six 3s and freshman forward Malik Abdullahi made clutch plays to secure that victory over Northeastern. Lee and Davis are tied for the team scoring lead at 17.3 points per game, while Pierce has been his usual self with 15 points and 8.3 rebounds. Lee is also averaging 5.3 rebounds and 7.3 assists.
SCOUTING LOYOLA: The Ramblers are coming off a 23-10 season in which they went 15-3 in the Atlantic 10 and won a share of regular-season title. Drew Valentine’s side is off to a 3-0 start this year, although those victories have hardly come against high-level opposition (Chicago State, Detroit Mercy and Division III Eureka College). Princeton may be the best team on the non-conference portion of the schedule (Loyola also plays Tulsa, South Florida, San Francisco and three games at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii over Christmas). The Ramblers are led in scoring by 6-4 guard Jayden Dawson at 16.3 points per game. He is one of nine players averaging at least six points per game. Dawson, Des Watson and Sheldon Edwards Jr. are all returners off last season’s team. Watson averaged a team-high 12.6 points. Loyola balanced out its roster by adding transfers Jalen DeLoach, a 6-9, 225-pound forward from Georgia, and Justin Moore, a 6-3 guard from Drexel.
