Police arrest Topeka man after deadly shooting

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Police in Topeka have arrested a local man in connection to a recent shooting that left one person dead.
The Topeka Police Department announced in a press release on Nov. 14 that Du'Jontez J. Owens, 24, of Topeka was arrested on murder in the first degree and other charges in connection to the death of 45-year-old Ricky R. Washington Jr. on Nov. 10. Owens' charges include the following:
Conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree; intentional and premeditated.
Murder in the first degree; intentional and premeditated.
Attempted murder in the first degree; intentional and premeditated.
Police were called around 9 a.m. on Nov. 10 to the 1200 block of Southwest Huntoon Street on reports of a shooting. Officers arriving at the scene found one person with life-threatening injuries and another, later identified as Washington, dead. Washington's death is the 17th homicide of the year in Topeka.
