PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Public School District has confirmed that student vaccinations and drivers license numbers may have been compromised in the district’s recent data breach.  Back in September,  PPSD announced it had seen irregular activity on its network earlier this month, shutting things down and working to investigate the problem. In a letter to students and families, PPSD wrote that they had identified a limited number of files where an individual student or guardian’s personal information was exposed, and they would sending  those families and students mailings to inform them. “We again apologize for the concern that this matter has caused for our families and staff. Please know that the protection of your personal information and the safety of our students and staff remain our top priorities,” said the district in the letter to families. “We have implemented additional safeguards to prevent unauthorized access in the future and are evaluating additional measures to further strengthen the security of the network,” they continued. PPSD said they are now at a point where their investigation into the breach is “substantially complete,” and as well as vaccinations and drivers license numbers, the district identified files that contain student roster information for all students. Student roster information includes contain fields such as student name, grade, school, program type, and home address. The district also identified files containing some students’ special education status, including some documents regarding students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or meeting notes. “While these files do not contain personal information as identified in R.I. Gen. Laws § 11-49.3, such as social security information, financial information, or medical information, we felt that it was important to share with families so that you are aware,” the letter further stated. The district said they would continue to update families as more information becomes available Categories: News
