PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A 48-year-old man wanted for murder in Rhode Island is now one of the U.S. Marshals Service's 15 Most Wanted Fugitives.
Olalekan Abimbola Olawusi was charged with murder and two counts of inflicting serious bodily injury to a child after police found his 3-month-old son bleeding at their Providence home back in April 2017.
The infant was rushed to the hospital in serious condition and needed to be resuscitated, officials said. Doctors found 18 injuries at different stages of healing, indicating a pattern of abuse.
The child was placed on life support but died six months later, according to officials.
Olawusi was arrested on April 20, 2017. He was released that same day, but then fled the area.
Investigators later learned that Olawusi flew out of New York in June 2017 using his Nigerian passport. It's believed he is getting help from family members in Nigeria and could be a danger to other children.
The suspect, who also goes by Olekun Olawusi, stands 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs around 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
There is a $25,000 reward being offered for information leading to his arrest.
Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to call the U.S. Marshals Service at 1-877-WANTED2 (926-8332) or the USMS Tips App.
