NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Orleans Publish School Board announced Thursday, Nov. 14 that Dr. Avis Williams will step down from her position of Dr. Avis Williams. Williams joined the NOLA Public School system in July 2022 "bringing new energy and enthusiasm to NOLA-PS and schools improving performance", according to OPSB President Katie Baudouin.  Sweet, savory, and stuffed beignets at Beignet Fest in City Park She was chosen after a nationwide superintendent search. Williams is the first woman chosen to be a permanent Superintendent of School in Orleasn Parish. At the beginning of her tenure. Williams told WGNO that her commitment was to build a stronger future for our scholars and our parish.  Photo courtesy: New Orleans Public Schools (NOLA-PS) NOLA-PS officials said under her leadership, the district improved academic outcomes evident through increased school performance scores of over three points.  Additionally, she is noted for developing robust partnerships with Children’s Hospital New Orleans through a $10 million investment from the City of New Orleans to bring mental health resources into the schools.  Williams also headed the opening of the Leah Chase School, the first permanent district-run school in two decades.
