It was the Super Bowl shooting at Union Station that led to the death of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, which inspired Manny Ambarca to introduce the bill, which passed on Nov. 4.
Legislator Manny Abarca held meetings with teenagers since the shooting to find out how gun violence was impacting their lives and their communities. According to Barca, the ordinance represents the voices of our youth and addresses a request from law enforcement for tangible action on this issue.
The ordinance prohibits anyone under 21 from having a handgun or ammunition. Also, no one between the ages of 18 and 21 can have a semiautomatic assault rifle unless they're attending safety training or at a shooting range.

The ordinance also requires permission from a parent to loan, sell or give a firearm to anyone, 18 or under.
Not everyone is in favor of the ordinance. In fact, there are some gun rights experts who believe that the ordinance is illegal.
Now, the ordinance heads to the desk of Jackson County executive Frank White for his signature before it goes into law.
