'You better tell the truth': Burglary preceded 2001 homicide; alleged accomplice arrested 23 years later

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A Fort Wayne man who was questioned 23 years ago about a fatal shooting was arrested Wednesday in connection to the case.
Tommy Harris Jr., 43, faces preliminary charges of felony murder and burglary.
It's a step forward in a decades-old cold case. In the early hours of June 27, 2001, Larry Lovelace Jr. was killed in the 5300 block of McClellan Street on the edge of downtown.
When investigators spoke with Harris -- who would've been roughly 20 years old at the time -- he was first painted as a possible witness. He was also the cousin of Curtis White, who was shot and killed alongside Lovelace.
Harris initially told police he'd been walking on McClellan Street when he heard several gunshots and saw three men running from a house, according to Allen Superior Court documents.
But detectives noted they didn't believe Harris. At one point, they heard a woman call out to Harris, saying, "You know what happened, you better tell the truth," to which he replied, "I told them the truth," according to court documents.

Investigators eventually learned Harris was with White just before he and Lovelace were both shot. Harris was interviewed again and this time told police White had asked him to go for a ride that night. Harris claimed he didn't know where they were going, but the cousins ended up at the house on McClellan Street.
Harris told police in court documents White said he had to "take care of some business" and pulled out a handgun. Harris said in court documents he was afraid to ask White why he was taking a gun into the house, but the pair walked to the front door together.
Lovelace answered and let the two inside, Harris said. But a casual conversation turned deadly when White asked Lovelace where some money was, according to Harris' story he recounted to investigators.
That's when Lovelace allegedly picked up a gun, and White said, "Two can play at that game," according to court documents. Harris claimed he saw Lovelace fire first, hitting White, who returned fire.
Harris told police he got out of the home through a broken window, bringing with him White's gun.
But detectives at the crime scene determined Harris and White had actually broken into the home of Lovelace, who appeared to have been sleeping on the couch when the duo "surprised" him, according to court documents.
While the probable cause affidavit for Harris' involvement was filed Wednesday, it was written in December 2023, the document shows.
Court records also show Harris was arrested back in July on a separate charge not connected to the case and was later released. It's unclear why exactly Harris is just now facing charges in the homicide.
Following Wednesday's arrest, Harris is being held at the Allen County Jail.
