Former executive director of Fort Wayne UNITED receives Sagamore of the Wabash

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded Iric Headley, one of the founding minds behind Fort Wayne UNITED, with the Sagamore of the Wabash Thursday.
Alongside former Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, Headley helped launch Fort Wayne UNITED in 2016.

The organization is known for some of its citywide programs and initiatives that aim to help the community, including the Ten Point Coalition.
“Under Iric’s direction, Fort Wayne UNITED was built with a group of our city’s leaders, and we’ve been able to see positive results and lives have been changed for the better," Henry said in March 2023.

Headley stepped down as Fort Wayne UNITED's executive director in 2023 after taking a position with Surack Enterprises, but he maintained his involved with the organization by becoming a co-chair of the Fort Wayne UNITED steering committee.
Although Fort Wayne UNITED started out as a city program, the organization recently opted to branch off and become its own nonprofit.
Former Indiana Gov. Ralph Gates created the Sagamore of the Wabash, which is the highest honor the governor of Indiana can bestow, in the 1940s, and every governor since Gates has utilized the award in their own ways.
There are no official records to determine how many people have been awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash, and each governor reserves the right to personally select the recipients.
