CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Two vessels on opposite sides of the Charleston peninsula had to be salvaged after taking on water over the weekend. Charleston Fire Department’s marine division responded to vessels in distress. The first incident happened Saturday evening at The Harborage at Ashley Marine where a vessel took on water at its mooring. “Upon arrival, they assessed the scene to ensure there were no immediate life hazards,” the department said in a Facebook post. Crews worked with marina management, the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Natural Resources to plan salvage efforts. A second incident was reported the following morning. Fire officials said a vessel moored at the Maritime Center was roughly 50% submerged. “After assessing the area, they determined commercial salvage would be necessary to address the incident. Due to a significant sheen on the water, crews deployed hazmat booms to contain the spill and notified the USCG National Response Center and DNR about pollution risks,” the department said. US Coast Guard crews evaluated the situation and the vessel’s owner was informed about salvage operations. No injuries were reported.
