Family Focus: New book aims to help families connect with conversation after dinner

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Quality family time at home is a big deal for Jan Risher. She wants other families to put down their cell phones and other technology and make it a priority to connect and reflect on their day.
The veteran Baton Rouge journalist and author has published her third book, "Question of the Day, Encouraging Conversation and Connection." It helps moms and dads create priceless moments with their children around the dinner table.
"I am on a campaign to encourage people to be with their families, be with their friends around the table as often as possible," said Risher.
Risher said the book is about sobremesa, a Spanish word that means "on the table" or "over the table." She said "it's about that time after a meal when you sit around the table and you're talking."
It's not your typical book of reading chapters. It has thought-provoking questions for each day so families can learn something new about each other. Some questions are "What's your favorite scent or aroma? Who has been a great mentor to you?"
Answers can be written down every night in the book and used as a cherished record of moment. Risher believes the book could become a time capsule or a treasure that families can keep for years.

Risher and her husband have been doing sobremesa since their daughters were in kindergarten. She said the nightly routine has kept the lines of communication open and allowed her children to talk to her about anything.
"It allows for more freedom. It allows for more comfort," said Risher.
Data shows families sharing regular meals can lower the rate of children having violent behavior or alcohol and substance abuse and increase their self-esteem and success at school.
"I believe in this time of so much division and strife that that special time around a table could change the world," said Risher.
The new book is available at Red Stick Reads in Baton Rouge and Cavalier Books in Denham Springs.
