Q: CannonEliana, the first one is the infant car seat. What do we need to know about that?
A: TroncaleFirst, read your manual. Every car seat is a little bit different, so it's important to read the manual. You can even look on the manufacturer's website.
Q: CannonAnd there's kind of two parts to this. We want to make sure that the car seat is installed properly in the vehicle, but there's also making sure that it fits correctly on the child, right?
A: TroncaleWhen you install an infant carrier in your car, you need to make sure that it's at the right recline angle, especially with newborns. And you don't want them up too high. Most car seats have either a recline indicator, which is like a bubble, or a balance or even a line. So the recline angle, and then probably another huge important factor is the correct tightness. I teach parents something called the inch chest. So, if your car seat can move more than an inch side to side, that's too loose.
Q: CannonTalk about the proper fit for the baby.
A: TroncaleI would say there are three steps. The first is making sure that the shoulder straps are at the right level. So, when it's an infant carrier and it's rear-facing, they [the straps] need to be at or below the shoulders. The next thing would be another test that I teach parents, which is called the pinch test. So you need to make sure that the harness is nice and flat on the baby's body.
And if you're able to pinch any of the harnesses, that's also too loose. So, you need to pull it and make it tighter. And then the third one would be the chest clip. It needs to always be on the chest at the level of the armpit.
Q: CannonSo what's next? What's the next level car seat?
A: TroncaleThe next level is the convertible car seat. You can use it two ways, but we recommend going rear-facing as long as possible. This particular car seat will go until your child is 50 pounds.
Q: CannonAll right. Let's get the next one out. It's for bigger kids. Tell me a little bit about this seat. It can be used longer because you can change it.
A: TroncaleRight. So, this is a booster seat. This particular model can be used as a high-back booster seat, and you take the top off and use the bottom when your kids get even older. A booster seat simply boosts them up and you're actually using the car seat belt. It puts them at that right level so the seat belt fits them properly, which is on the shoulder and across the hip and the lap.
