DOJ: Atwater correctional officer charged with assault, falsifying reports

ATWATER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A senior correctional officer at a federal prison in Atwater has been charged with assaulting an inmate and falsifying documents to obstruct justice, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
The DOJ says on Nov. 2, 2023, 42-year-old Sandra Munagay of Atwater, a senior correctional officer at the U. S. Penitentiary in Atwater struck an inmate housed at the federal prison.
Officials state Munagay falsified a report about the incident that same day.
Munagay is scheduled for a status conference on Dec. 11. If convicted, the DOJ says she faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for falsifying a report to obstruct an investigation, as well as one year in prison and a $100,000 fine for assault.
