Company behind proposed overnight train between L.A. and S.F. hires firm to design trains

(KTLA) -- A company looking to use existing tracks to provide luxury overnight train trips between Los Angeles and the Bay Area has announced another crucial step toward the project becoming a reality.
On Tuesday, Dreamstar Lines, a Newport Beach-based transit startup, announced it had hired a design firm to create initial concepts for its rail car interiors and exteriors.
Designworks, a subsidiary of the BMW Group, has been tasked to design the future Dreamstar train cars, which will include first-class suites with bedrooms and restrooms, standard cars with seating and bedrooms, and lounge cars with open seating and a bar.
Dreamstar says the design concepts will provide a "vision for a luxurious blend of comfort and elegance."

Designworks was shortlisted to design the train cars, company officials said, but was ultimately selected after expressing interest in the project early on after learning about it.
"They were selected based on their capability to deliver the vision we had in mind for anchoring the brand as high-end, luxurious and desirable," Dreamstar CEO Joshua Dominic said.
Designworks has more than 50 years of experience in the mobility industry and works with both BMW and external clients, officials said.
The mission to connect Los Angeles to San Francisco by train is not an unfamiliar concept to most Californians.
Currently, the state is constructing a high-speed rail system to connect the two economic hubs by way of the Central Valley. The timeline for when that would be fully completed is unknown.
Amtrak also provides connectivity between the two cities via its Coast Starlight and, partially, Pacific Surfliner trains.
But Dreamstar's pitch differs from the established passenger rail systems in that it would operate in the evening hours and provide a hotel-like experience for riders. Those traveling to-and-from the two cities could theoretically go to bed in and wake up the next day in the other.
Company officials said they hope a new overnight passenger rail service would give Californians and other travelers a more comfortable, convenient and Earth-friendly alternative to short-haul flights.

An overnight sleeper train between downtown L.A. and downtown San Francisco has not existed since the former Southern Pacific “Lark” route ended in 1968, according to Trains.com.
"The Dreamstar concept is designed to provide an alternative to the drawbacks of travel by traditional rail, airlines, automobiles and buses," a news release from the company states. "These modes are fraught with challenges including crowded transportation hubs, stopovers, aging vehicles, inconvenience, stress and minimal amenities. Passengers not only avoid those issues with Dreamstar, but spend less waking time traveling as they will be able to restfully sleep for most of their journey."
The overnight train would utilize the Coast Line railroad between L.A. and San Francisco. Earlier this year, Dreamstar reached a memorandum of understanding with Union Pacific, a freight company that owns the majority of the railroad's right-of-way.
A formal agreement was still being ironed out, and Dreamstar would still need to negotiate with Southern California's Metrolink and Northern California's Caltrain, but company officials were optimistic about getting a deal done.
A timeline for when service could feasibly begin is unclear, but in April, Dreamstar floated the idea of Summer 2025. Company officials said there are also plans to expand to other markets if a California launch is successful.
