Oakland just went nearly 7 weeks without a homicide

(KRON) -- Oakland police officers responded to the 1100 block of 71st Avenue on Wednesday afternoon for a fatal shooting, marking the city's first homicide since September, the Oakland Police Department said.
The shooting happened at about 2:30 p.m. The still-unidentified victim died at the scene.
Before that, the last homicide in Oakland was on Sept. 28, according to police.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao had championed a drop in crime in Oakland under her watch. The city implemented a ceasefire strategy, and Thao reported a 33% drop in homicides in 2024.
“Crime is down. Crime is down, and you cannot hide bodies, so we know those numbers are accurate,” said Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.
Still, the drop in crime did not save Thao from being recalled. More than 61% of Oakland voters decided they wanted her out of office on Election Day.
Before Wednesday's shooting, the last two homicides in Oakland happened on Sept 28. A victim shot on the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way died two weeks later, and 38-year-old Tony Odell Miller was shot and killed on the 1600 block of Adeline Street.
