(KRON) -- The Tamalpais High School football team is facing scrutiny in the aftermath of two reported cases of racial bias involving Black teammates allegedly being referred to as "monkeys." The assistant superintendent of the district elaborated in a letter, stating that anti-Black statements were made to and about a Black teammate.
In the letter obtained by KRON4 News, the Assistant Superintendent Kelly Lara said, "I am appalled that this has happened twice on the football team. Let me be clear, referring to Black teammates as 'monkeys' is racist speech. Referring to Black teammates as unable to be seen in the dark is racist speech."

The assistant superintendent also released a statement, saying, "This is unacceptable. It is deeply hurtful to the targeted teammate and to all Black teammates. The ripple of harm is not limited to the football team; this also hurts the wider Tam High community of Black students, staff, and families."
The letter was sent to all players and their families, and the district held a meeting with the team and their parents.
At school Wednesday, students shared their thoughts on the matter.
"I hope they figure out what is happening, and it ends," said a student named Sasha.
"They need an investigation into all of this," said another student named Max.
Currently, the Tam High football team is on probation. If further incidents occur, the team's entire season could be canceled. As of now, Tam High is scheduled to play this coming Friday.
