Nov 13, 2024
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - A groundbreaking documentary photography and narrative exhibit opened in Holyoke, to elevate Latinx transgender and gender-diverse people's voices and experiences.
This exhibit was curated by the organizations Transcending Identities and Transhealth in Northampton with the goal of shedding light on the unique challenges and triumphs faced by the Latinx transgender community.
Attendees were able to engage with photos and hear extended narratives about the participants' lives at the Holyoke Public Library, gaining a deeper understanding of their impact on society. "The visibility that we have is largely negative, so this really shows the real people behind the label if you will.," says Joan Erwin, CEO of Transhealth.
Founder of Transcending Identities, Dr. Eunice Aviles Faria told 22News that this exhibit is allowing them to talk and show who they really are.
Through this exhibit, organizers hope it will bring attention to the violence and discrimination that these individuals face on a daily basis, and help to eliminate it.
