Man dead after police shooting in Gary GARY, Ind. (WISH) — A suspect was fatally shot Wednesday after he attacked a Gary police officer with a machete during an undercover investigation, according to the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in an alert late Wednesday afternoon that detectives with the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fatal shooting. The alert said the suspect is a male, but neither Gary police or the sheriff’s office provided his age or identity. The male shot was taken to a hospital, where he died. The Gary officer who fired the fatal shot witnessed the attack. The officer who fired the fatal shot will be put on administrative leave during the investigation, Gary police say. The Gary officer who was attacked was stable after being taken to a hospital for treatment. The officer attacked was identified only as having worked for the Gary department for 32 years. The shooting happened around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 3400 block of Maryland Street. That’s in a residential area about a mile west of the interchange for I-65 and I-94 in northwest Indiana. Gary police say the undercover investigation followed a surge since October in robbery reports related to Marketplace exchanges initiated on social media. Undercover officers were posing as buyers. “No further details will be released from our agency at this time,” said the alert sent through the sheriff’s app at 5:22 p.m. Wednesday.
