GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Friday marks the 27th year of 'America Recycles Day', also referred to as 'National Recycling Day'. This observance began in the mid 1990s as 'Texas Recycling Day', but officially became a national observance in 1997. While this one day in the calendar year is meant to highlight helpful reminders on recycling properly, these tips should be practiced all year long. Sustainably Speaking: Donate instead of recycle your Halloween items In honor of 'National Recycling Day' this year, Local 5's Ryan Kudish teamed up with Skyler Buman, the owner of Junk King Green Bay-Appleton, to discuss just a few items that are and are not recyclable. Styrofoam: When you get a new printer or TV, it comes with Styrofoam to protect it while in the box. The dry cardboard box is recyclable, but the Styrofoam itself is not and should be placed in the trash. An important reminder that the box should be collapsed as flat as possible. Pizza Boxes: Another type of cardboard is pizza boxes, and this one comes with a bit of a twist as the way to handle these items can vary by county. Tri-County Recycling will accept pizza boxes with some grease or oil, but others will ask to cut out the portion of the box with the contamination and throw that part in the trash. Plastics: This is where it gets tricky, as molded plastics like hangers and bags are not but fully cleaned-out cartons or bottles are. Appliances/Tires: These should never be placed in your curbside bin and should be dropped off at a local facility. While there is a small cost to dispose of these items, Human says by not doing so, more harm than good is being done. Aluminum: These are recyclable, but just like plastics, make sure the contents are cleaned out beforehand. Aluminum foil, however, is recyclable but not through your curbside bin. Junk King Green Bay-Appleton has been in business since early May. The company is a full-service junk removal business that tries to be as efficient and sustainable as possible by donating as many items from a site as possible. Buman says that there are still a few common reoccurring issues when it comes to recycling. "Just improper recycling, like the computer box with Styrofoam in it, food containers not being washed out, and a lot of times, people try and sneak stuff into the landfill that really shouldn't like tires, refrigerators, anything with Freon in it," says Buman. Sustainably Speaking: Green Bay Conservation Corps holds ‘Make A Difference Day’ There are a few reasons why the issues continue to be a problem, as Buman attributes it to a possible lack of education and having to pay for items to be disposed of by appliances that contain Freon. Many other items cause questions to be raised when it comes to discarding items. Human suggests quickly searching your county's regulations and most times there will be a separate link as to where you can take that item. Free-to-use mobile apps, like Better Bin, scan the barcode of items and tell the user whether that item is or is not recyclable.
