Miss Indiana Teen 2024 brings epilepsy awareness across the Hoosier state
Nov 13, 2024
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - November marks Epilepsy awareness month, a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Miss Indiana Teen 2024 was diagnosed with epilepsy, her goal is to spread awareness across the Hoosier state.
18-year-old Bella Bauer was in fifth grade when she experienced a grad mal seizure. During the time of her diagnosis, she found it difficult to find support from others who had experienced what she had.
"Really going through that and steps and process of figuring out what that was and what that would look like for my life was really important," said Bauer.

As Bauer became more open about her diagnosis, she realized the importance of communicating to her friends and family about what triggered her.
"People don't know that epilepsy can come in lots of different forms," Bauer said. "There's lots of different types of seizures, there's absence seizures, there's grand mal seizures, they can all be on set for different things. A lot of people have different triggers, and I think that's really important to know."
Bauer has been seizure free for some time, but is using her pageant platform to inform and help others with epilepsy.

"I started three years ago, where I really was able to thrive and share more about what my story looked like," explained Bauer. "But also now helping others overcome adversity in their lives. My goal truly is to just help as many students and kids in need that have been faced with this diagnosis of epilepsy."

Bauer along with the Fort Wayne Epilepsy Support Group will be hosting a free Seizure training on November 20 to help with awareness.
"I would love for every single school in the state of Indiana to mandate that seizure first aid," said Bauer. "There have been lives that have been lost because of people not being educated, so this event is the start of something really big, I believe, and I can't wait to see where it takes people."
The free Seizure training will take place at the main branch of the Allen County Public Library, in Meeting Room A, on Wednesday, November 20. The training will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The training is open to the public, where participants would receive a 2-year certification. To RSVP call 317-513-5665.
