(COLORADO SPRINGS) — As we approach the holiday season, you might be starting to think about gift giving for all your loved ones. You've probably heard the phrase "shop small", but you might not have heard about "shop creative". The phrase is part of a new, free, online guide for the area to help shoppers support both local businesses and local artists at the same time. The guide spans from Victor, to Palmer Lake, and includes Colorado Springs. The creator of the guides, is hoping to help local retailers recover from the negative impacts of the election. She says election season marks a tough time for local businesses, as the un-known leads to people spending less and saving more. To support your neighbors through the hardship, you can check out the gallery and market guide. "If we want a community that truly feels local and not generic, then we've got to show up for things that express the soul of this place. Our local arts community does that all through the year. The holidays are a great time when we can make intentional choices with our dollars to keep small creative businesses open and to keep artists working," said Angela Seals, the Executive Director of the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region, "(the guide) helps you find over 60 galleries. There's a map, so you can find one close to you or where you're shopping." Seals says there's lots of different kinds of locally made goods, making it easy to find that perfect unique gift with just a little searching. One of those local galleries is Gallery 113. Located in downtown colorado springs, they have a wide variety of items at a wide variety of prices. One of the galleries founders, who also has art for sale, says they need more people shopping downtown. "Original art does not have to be tremendously expensive. It can be a real source of joy in your life, in your home," said Karen Standridge, Gallery 113 President and Artist, "My heart really skips a beat, in knowing that they cared enough about what I made, to talk to me about it, to consider it, to purchase it, and to put it in their home." 17 different local people create the art within their store, all crafted with love and care. "We are not big box stores. We are all local, locally run businesses owned and operated by someone who is your neighbor," Standridge. The Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region says when you buy local at a local gallery, for every $10 you spend, $7 stays right here in our community.
