BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) -- The babysitter of a toddler who drowned in a swimming pool in 2020 was sentenced in a Berkeley County courtroom Wednesday. Stefanie Ann Johnson was sentenced to 20 years in prison, suspended to 10 years in connection to the child’s death after entering an Alford plea in February. An Alford plea is when a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that a guilty verdict is likely if the case goes to trial. Hannahan Police responded to the home on May 23, where they found the child face down in a swimming pool. An affidavit from the department said the toddler also had visible injuries and bruises on its face. The toddler was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina by first responders, where they were placed on a ventilator and later died. Following this, Johnson admitted to authorities she was under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs when the incident occurred.
