New details in fatal Marketplace shooting: Victim was armed, had history with suspect
Nov 13, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- 17 News has confirmed with the Bakersfield Police Department that the teen who died during the Marketplace shooting was wearing a ski mask and holding a pistol at the time he was killed.
Police also say the victim and the suspect likely knew each other.
Since the Sunday incident, social media has buzzed nonstop with questions on the relationship between the boys and how the two teens were armed.
"Well, we responded to reports of a fight because that's what was originally reported, and then we arrived sometime later and discovered there had been a shooting…" said BPD Chief Greg Terry, Wednesday morning on 17 News at Sunrise.
"There is some information to believe that these two had some sort of a history or connection or knew each other prior to that night…But it's not just some random event that everybody's out and these two strangers run into each other," the chief continued.
BPD said it's unclear if the suspect and/or victim were involved in the initial fight.
Chief Terry also said BPD received the initial report of a fight about an hour before the shooting, but didn't have the manpower to respond.
Officers added that it's unclear what mall security's role was before, during and after the incident.
Property management for the Marketplace did not respond to requests for comment.
17 News has also learned the 15-year-old victim of Sunday night's shooting -- Prince Michael Banner -- was also armed during the incident.
BPD stated detectives don't believe Banner fired any shots and that the only firearm used in the shooting was by the suspect, 15-year-old Albert Briseno Jr.
That gun's whereabouts remains unknown.
While the make and model of the firearm are unknown, BPD said 9mm casings were located on scene. BPD also said it's unclear how either teen got the guns. And among swirling social media rumors about the case, is a video in which an individual appears to be lying bloody on the ground wearing a ski mask and holding a gun.
BPD confirmed that individual is Banner just after the shooting, though officers are unsure who took or posted the clip. The community's shock is not only over the young age of the suspect and victim but also the location of the shooting -- the Marketplace.
"It is a family friendly place," said Chief Terry. "It is a place where it's not uncommon to have large groups of teens gathering. We've had reports of peace disturbances and fights like that in the past, and so it was not an uncommon event."
Terry said that for some time now, BPD has worked with security and managers on site in an attempt to find the right intervention and response to large youth gatherings.

17 has confirmed Banner and Briseno attended Stockdale High School together last year.
This year, Banner was a sophomore at Stockdale, while Briseno is part of Kern High School District's Independent Studies Program.
BPD explained the Sunday shooting appears to have been an escalation of a past altercation between the two teens.BPD told us that Briseno, the suspect, has associates with a local criminal street gang, but that there is no formal documentation or confirmation that he is a member.
Detectives said Briseno has a record of running away from home multiple times.
Briseno surrendered himself Tuesday afternoon and is in juvenile hall with legal representation. As for Banner, BPD said he was not involved in any gang but was arrested in 2023 at the Marketplace for attempting to steal a bike.
BPD advises the community -- especially children -- to be aware of their surroundings and to not touch a firearm should they come across one.
