San DiegoOceanside rail services suspended for this weekend
Nov 13, 2024
All railroad freight and passenger services will be suspended this weekend between San Diego and Oceanside for regularly scheduled maintenance and construction work along the tracks.
Two ongoing projects overseen by the San Diego Association of Governments will be the primary focus of the work. One is the effort to stabilize the eroding Del Mar bluffs, and the other is the construction of a double-tracked bridge to replace an old, single-track wooden trestle across the Batiquitos Lagoon.
In Del Mar, crews will install more steel beams and reinforce existing piles to protect the coastal bluffs holding the railroad tracks. At Batiquitos Lagoon, on the border of Carlsbad and Encinitas, workers are installing a temporary platform parallel to the existing bridge.
Nearby residents may hear construction noise and see work lights overnight. Pedestrian trails accessing the Del Mar bluffs will be closed temporarily for safety.
The route is used by Coaster, Amtrak, and BNSF freight trains. The closures will begin at 12 a.m. Saturday and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, when all rail service will resume.
