County begins project to make Ridge Road safer
Nov 13, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- On Monday, Nov. 18, drivers on North Ridge Road in the county will start seeing road crews and equipment.
Sedgwick County plans to widen the road's shoulders and lessen the slope of the ditches between 53rd Street North and 69th North. The whole project will take until late spring, but the county is breaking it into two phases.

The first phase starts Monday in the one-mile stretch between 61st and 69th North. Each Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., drivers will stop for flaggers and wait for a pilot to lead them through a single traffic lane.
When the roadwork is stopped for the day or the weekend, Ridge Road will be open to two-way traffic but with slower speeds and narrower lanes.

When the second phase gets close to starting, the county will release details about how it will impact drivers. The beginning of the second phase will depend a lot on the weather.
“Road work is always an inconvenience to drivers, and we appreciate their patience,” Lynn Packer, director of Sedgwick County Public Works, said in a news release. “Once this project is done, Ridge Road will have much wider, paved shoulders and flatter slopes on the ditches, making it easier and safer for a car to pull over if needed.”
