MONSON, Mass. (WWLP) - Despite the cooler weather, elevated wildfire risk continues for all of Massachusetts. 22News spoke to the Monson Fire Department which is still working to put out a fire that started in late October. High wind speeds and low precipitation are the two largest factors keeping this fire going. Humidity levels during the evening hours have risen enough to keep embers from reigniting. Monson Fire Captain Lisa Hamill spoke about why these fires are still happening despite the Red Flag Warnings. "People think 'if I don't put anything hot outside, I'm fine, I'm not having a campfire so I'm fine, I'm not burning brush so I'm fine,' but it's anything that can create a spark," says Captain Hamill. The current drought stage is severe in areas of Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties. With little rain expected in the near future, this trend is expected to continue.
