Proposal to offer tax relief for lowincome Springfield homeowners
Nov 13, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Mayor Sarno announced a targeted tax relief initiative for the city.
This tax relief initiative would help low-income homeowners who are elderly or disabled. The funds for this initiative which are supported by voluntary donations would provide tax relief for homeowners who do not qualify under the current tax relief exemptions.

This includes disabled veterans, those who are legally blind, a surviving spouse, those over 70 years of age with maximum asset restrictions, those 65 years old with maximum income and assets restrictions, and the Massachusetts Senior Circuit Tax Credit.
In a statement, Mayor Sarno says, "Other communities in the Commonwealth have successfully adopted this and Springfield is looking forward to providing yet another means to offer tax relief."
If this is adopted, a targeted Tax Relief Committee would be created and that would include five members which would be made up of three residents, a chair of the Board of Assessors, and a treasurer. They would be tasked with eligibility requirements, designations, and the tax relief offset amount for the elderly and disabled community.
