WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - With brush fires continuing to burn, firefighters must face the challenge of controlling unpredictable fires before embers spread to nearby brush, structures, or homes. A building fire overnight in Stockbridge highlighted how difficult it can be to control both brush fires and structure fires under dry, breezy conditions. Two 3-story buildings each caught fire. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to a third building nearby, but this comes as 4 major brush fires rage on in western Massachusetts. State tracking four brush fires in western Massachusetts West Springfield Fire Lieutenant Tony Spear told 22News why these fires are spreading so quickly, and what makes them so difficult to put out. "This is one of the things that we warn people with the windy conditions," Spear said. "Not only does it help the fire spread, move along, feed it, it also can spread in the sense that it can carry embers quite easily to rooftops and neighboring homes and neighboring structures as well." Challenges not only come with the weather and locating a fire's source but also with existing vegetation in the affected area. "The vegetation is so deep and thick and right now the leaves that are falling on top of the already dry vegetation are kind of just making it extra deep and difficult to dig through," Spear added. Under Red Flag Warnings, Spear reminds people to stay extra vigilant. Obey no burn orders, dispose of smoking materials properly, and clear any excess brush away from your home. That could prevent a brush fire from spreading to the nearest structure. Finally, pay close attention to the regulations your community has in place during Red Flag Warnings, as they may vary. With heightened awareness, following these guidelines should help mitigate the risk of fires as our region remains under drought-like conditions.
