PORT WENTWORTH, Ga (WSAV) - A 3,000-square-foot training facility now belongs to the Port Wentworth Police Department, which allows for exercises including firearms, community policing and de-escalation classes, along with active shooter response.
Training Coordinator Lt. Austin Neumann said the department uses two systems, virtual and augmented realities, to prep officers for real-life scenarios.
“We put officers into simulations and basically run them through scenarios of things that they can and can't do and they can talk back and forth to the actual simulation people,” Neumann explained. “They have different force options to give them the better training scenarios for the real life.”
With the continuous growth of the city, Neumann told News 3 that this new addition allows the department to offer the highest quality of law enforcement to serve the community.

Law enforcement agencies across the region are also expected to utilize the center to train their officers.
“This training facility will not only help us with our expansion and better professionalism, but there’s really only a few of these kind of big training facilities around,” Neumann said. “Most of the time they're so booked that you can't get in the classes or they just might not be available and they're so far and few between. So now that we have one that we have just for us and that we can invite other people to come to.”
Neumann said that he has received positive feedback from his team and from community members who were able to try out the systems.
“It really kind of gave me a new perspective,” he said. “So, it's only going to better us, which is going to better the community. It's a win-win."
Neumann said the equipment is also portable, which allows officers to perform mock drills in school buildings and other work environments. He said all it takes is a scan of the building, using the augmented reality equipment.
