NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – As the weather gets nippier and the sun sets sooner, the likelihood of running into a coyote goes up. So what should you do if you encounter one, and what kind of coyotes do we have in New Mexico? According to Chaz Moxley, Curator of Mammals with the ABQ BioPark, there are 19 subspecies of coyotes and New Mexico is home to 16 of them. That being said, the ones you might see in the Albuquerque area will most likely be the Texas Plains Coyote or the Mearns Coyote along the Rio Grande or the Bosque. Does New Mexico have crows or ravens? Communications Director for the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish Darren Vaughan said if you do see one in your neighborhood, maintain a safe distance from it. "If you notice a coyote near your home, make sure to take precautions to keep your children and small pets safe while they're outdoors," said Vaughan. "Another big thing is make sure you take out any potential food source. Don't leave any of that stuff out that might draw them to your yard." Vaughan said this is the time of year we see more coyotes mostly because of food scarcity. "They do have to range a bit farther outside of their normal summer area to find food," said Vaughan. Also, this time of year coincides with the coyote's breeding season. They've also become more accustomed to being around people and vehicle traffic. For the most part, Vaughan said coyotes will move on on their own if left alone. "It would not be normal for a coyote to get overly comfortable being around humans, like direct human contact," adds Vaughan. He said if you do find coyotes becoming habituated to being fed, that would be a good sign to call Game & Fish to intervene.
