Slopeside Village aims to expand
Nov 13, 2024
Columbus Pacific Development hopes to expand Slopeside Village, an affordable employee housing complex nestled along S.R. 224, by the 2026-27 season.“The first phase has been, we think, overwhelmingly successful,” said Tony Tyler with Columbus Pacific Development during a Snyderville Basin Planning Commission meeting in October. “We have actually more than 1,153 people on site today, and we’ve been able to accommodate a few more through a couple of furniture changes inside of the units as well.”The first phase of development, which began to house residents in November 2022 and was completed in October 2023, was designed to be an affordable housing complex for Summit County workers and offers a mix of dormitory, one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units, as well as a small number of townhomes.Slopeside Village’s construction was part of the Canyons Development Agreement, which “outlined critical employee housing construction requirements and detailed employee housing rental requirements,” according to background provided in the agenda from the Oct. 22 meeting. These requirements were fulfilled by the completion of the first phase, but Tyler said that there is still enough demand to warrant the proposed expansion.Plans for the second phase were submitted in August and include 149 employee units that could house up to 324 residents, as well as a new parking garage with 149 parking spaces, EV charging stations and bicycle storage.“Today, we’re at 98% occupancy,” Tyler said. “We only have 20 resident spaces effectively open today, and we’ve got a demographic that spans 23 countries.”Aesthetically, the buildings included in the second phase would be made of a similar material as the first phase, but the color palette would use more earthen tones to better blend in with the geography along S.R. 224, according to Tyler.“We’re actively out to bid from a construction perspective, and our goal is to start by the end of the year,” he added. “It’s aggressive. I get it. But there’s a real reason for it, and the reason is these buildings take around 20 months to build and my goal is to have them delivered by fall, effectively, of 2026 and be open for the ’26-27 ski season.”Members of the Planning Commission unanimously voted in favor of a positive recommendation to the county manager regarding the proposal. The post Slopeside Village aims to expand appeared first on Park Record.
