Etiwanda football coach Nick Baiz steps downs after six seasons
Nov 13, 2024
Nick Baiz helped deliver the second CIF Southern Section football title in school history to Etiwanda High School.
But now he says it’s time to step away.
“I thought the timing was right,” Baiz said. “I thought that if I can’t really put 100 percent of myself into this job, then I’ll let someone else do it.”
Baiz, 51, has compiled a 163-79-2 record as a head coach at Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga and Etiwanda. He won CIF titles at Rancho Cucamonga (2008) and Etiwanda (2022). He was 3-6-1 this season at Etiwanda, his sixth season at the school..
“This is the third job I’ve stepped away from. It never gets easier because of the relationships with the players,” Baiz said.
Baiz said he and his wife plan on seeing their children more on the weekends. His son Jake is finishing up his senior football season at Cal Lutheran and wants to begin a coaching career in the fall. Baiz resigned from his previous head coaching job at Rancho Cucamonga after the 2017 season to help out at Webb, where his son was playing.
Baiz’s daughter Morgan attends San Diego State and works in the football recruiting office there, and Baiz wants to support her.
His father, Bob, also a former football coach, needs more care as well. In addition, he plans on taking better care of his own health, although he says right now he has no specific health issues.
Baiz’s older brother Bob, who teaches at Chaffey College, was coaching with him at Etiwanda and was supportive of the decision.
“We always have a discussion after every year (about coaching the following year),” Baiz said of his brother. “He was good with the decision. I don’t know if he’s permanently done.”
Baiz knows it won’t be easy going without football.
“I’m sure I’ll miss it. It’ll be my first time not on a sideline working or playing in probably 40 years,” Baiz said. “I don’t know if I will coach again. Right now, I’m focusing on family stuff.”
He said he has no plans to stop teaching at Etiwanda and will support the new coach.
Athletic director Don Furnald said the position will be flown next week.
