New traffic signal device installed for pedestrians and cyclists in Richmond
Nov 13, 2024
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Richmond's Department of Public Works has installed a new traffic signal device on South Belvidere Street at Rowe Street in support of the Vision Zero initiative.
A Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon was installed near the Virginia War Memorial on South Belvidere Street and Rowe Street. According to the City of Richmond, the new traffic device will be activated later this week.
The city said that these devices are designed to assist pedestrians and bikers crossing busy or high-speed, multi-lane roads and intersections that are uncontrolled -- ensuring that the streets in Richmond are safer and walkable.
In addition, the traffic device gives drivers more clarity and signals to improve awareness, as well as safety.
For pedestrians:
When pedestrians are ready to cross, press the button to activate the signal
The signal will turn on and alert drivers that a pedestrian needs to cross.
For drivers:
When the signal activates, it will flash a yellow light, followed by a red signal to direct drivers to stop.
When the pedestrian has crossed the street safely, the light will turn off and drivers can continue driving.
