Providence Public Schools to exit federal monitoring that was part of settlement agreement
Nov 13, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Public Schools said that it reached an agreement with the Department of Justice to end federal monitoring that was implemented due to “non-compliance issues and failure to properly serve multilingual learners.”
The monitoring was pat of a settlement agreement from 2018 from a suit that accused the school of not giving guidance and support to multilingual students.
The new agreement will see the DOJ continue to monitor the district’s Newcomer Academy and its 300 students through 2027, but the rest of the district will no longer be monitored.
“We’re pleased that the Department of Justice has recognized RIDE and PPSD’s considerable progress in addressing systemic non-compliance issues that have hindered the success for multilingual learners for far too long,” Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green said. “As a daughter of immigrants, a multilingual learner, and a mother of multilingual learners, I know that multilingual students can thrive if they are given the right supports. I’m deeply appreciative of the school leaders and staff and community partners who’ve worked diligently and collaboratively to ensure we better serve our students and were able to reach this milestone for PPSD.”
