Nov 13, 2024
EXETER, R.I. (WPRI) — Firefighters have knocked down a brush fire that broke out off the highway near the Exeter-West Greenwich line Wednesday morning.
The brush fire, which ignited along I-95 South near Exit 14B, was caused by a tire and rim falling off of a truck, according to Rhode Island State Police.
Firefighters spent some time spraying down the nearby woods to prevent future flare ups.

Firefighters also returned to the woods off of Lydia and Jade roads in Coventry, where a brush fire burned as much as two acres on Tuesday.
Coventry Fire Chief Frank Brown told 12 News firefighters were putting out hot spots in the woods to prevent the fire from reigniting.
"What happens is ... it starts smoking and we put water on it. The next thing you know, it pops up [elsewhere]," Brown explained. "So, we are kind of chasing it."
"We are asking people to use a lot of caution over the next few weeks until we can get some rain or snow," he continued. "Maybe that'll help."
Right now, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are both under Red Flag Warnings due to the abnormally dry and breezy conditions, which can not only cause brush fires, but also allow them to spread quickly.
The U.S. Drought Monitor puts most of Rhode Island in a moderate drought, while more than half of Bristol County is experiencing abnormally dry conditions. The current forecast shows the region may not see any rain until at least next week.
Anyone who notices flames, smoke or other signs of a brush fire is urged to call it in immediately so firefighters can investigate and contain it as quickly as possible.
