CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) -- A convicted sex offender is now going to spend 40 years in prison after murdering a 2-year-old girl and threatening the mother of his child.

The 2-year-old's mother, Tiesha Burton, left her two daughters with Harvion Simpkins and his mother while Burton went to work. Simpkins was the father to at least one of Burton's children and the couple were sharing a hotel room.
The Commonwealth’s evidence showed that from around March 28 through March 29, 2023, officers investigated several vulgar and threatening text messages that Simpkins sent to Burton.
Burton had called Simpkins' mother asking her to pick up the children, but his mother was unable to, according to previous coverage. Burton then showed up to the hotel with police to help get her children and belongings from their shared hotel room in Greenbrier.
According to previous coverage, officers arrived and activated their body cameras. In the video, the little girl was crying. At one point, Simpkins’ expressed frustration about Burton calling the police.
One of the minor children — the 2-year-old girl — was found to be acting abnormally and showed bruising.
The child was eventually transported to CHKD emergency department. The child died as a result of blunt force head trauma and abdominal trauma.
