It was another nice fall day across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday as our tranquil stretch of weather rolled on. After the brief cooldown Tuesday, temperatures recovered nicely on the heels of some early sunshine and a southeast wind as afternoon highs reached the low to mid-60s in most locations. You may have noticed a steady increase in mid to high level cloud cover through the course of the day, which is an indication that changes are on the way as our next storm system rolls through the Ohio Valley into the late week. You’ll need the rain gear out the door on Thursday as an area of low pressure spins by to our north pulling a trailing cold front through the commonwealth. The bulk of the steady, soaking rain should fall during the overnight/early morning hours but more scattered showers are expected throughout the day. Solid rainfall totals are on the table with most locations picking up a good 1″ to 1.5″ of rain with localized areas seeing over 2″ where we see some heavier downpours. It looks to be pretty damp, dreary and a bit blustery on Thursday with the occasional showers, breezy southwest winds and afternoon highs topping out in the mid to upper 50s. Our rain chances will wind down on Friday but we are entering that time of the year where low level moisture and cloud cover can be tough to scour out even after the parent storm system moves on. This looks to be the case as we close out the week on Friday with mostly cloudy skies expected for much of the day. This should hold temperatures down a bit with afternoon highs in the mid-50s although enough dry air could build in to break some of the clouds apart by the end of the day. We aren’t expecting any rainfall and it still should be a good night for the second round of the high school football playoffs here in the commonwealth. This weekend looks delightful as high pressure wins out and we see a return of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. Afternoon highs should be slightly above average for mid-November with readings topping out around 60 degrees on Saturday with low 60s expected Sunday. It should be a good weekend for any outdoor activities including Kentucky and Murray State at Kroger Field at 1:45pm Saturday afternoon. The quiet weather should hang around into early next week before another frontal system increases our rain chances but that may not happen until next Tuesday/Wednesday. One thing we are watching is a big change in our weather pattern late next week which may bring a legitimate shot at cold air to the region.
