Nov 13, 2024
MANCHESTER, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) has charged a Clay County mother with murder following the death of her infant daughter. Authorities say Brianna “Morgan” Burkhart was initially under investigation for child abuse after her three-month-old daughter was hospitalized in April with severe injuries, including fractures, hemorrhages, and retinal bleeding.
The investigation began after KSP was contacted by the Department of Community Based Services on April 20, 2024, following the child’s admission to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Police identified Burkhart as the primary suspect, leading to her indictment on June 3, 2024, by a grand jury on three counts of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree criminal abuse involving a child under 12.
Tragically, on September 10, 2024, the child succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. In response to the new information, Detective James Royal presented his findings to the Clay County Grand Jury, which issued a superseding indictment on November 7, charging Burkhart with murder.
The investigation remains ongoing, with further proceedings scheduled in Clay County Circuit Court.
