Rape, battery accusations
IMPD officers were called late last Friday, Nov. 8, to a home near 10th Street and North Tibbs Avenue for a reported rape in progress. A caller told 911 dispatch that she was raped several times and that her husband had been choked with an extension cord.
Upon arrival, officers saw a woman running out of the back door of the house. She came into contact with police and told them that a man named James Taylor had raped her and strangled her husband inside the house.
The suspect, James Taylor, was still on scene when officers arrived. He was taken into custody while detectives interviewed the female victim.
Officers went inside and found the husband with redness and bruising on his neck. He was then taken to Eskenazi Hospital by local medics. The husband later told police that Taylor had threatened him with a knife, beaten him with a lamp and knocked him unconscious before strangling him.
The woman told police that she'd met Taylor the night before at a gas station on Tibbs Avenue, stating that he had "good weed." The woman reportedly invited Taylor back to her house to smoke marijuana.
Upon arrival at the couple's house, the woman said Taylor's demeanor immediately changed and that he began demanding money from them. Taylor also reportedly threatened to "put the woman on the street," implying that he'd make her a prostitute.
The woman said that Taylor then became aggressive and forced her to strip nude and lay down on a mattress in the living. Taylor then reportedly sexually assaulted the woman while her husband was forced to watch.
Court records detail how the husband attempted to physically stop Taylor, but stated that his efforts her thwarted after Taylor choked him out with an extension cord. The woman said she also tried to fight Taylor and stop the strangulation, but that he was too strong.
The woman said that the unwanted sexual fondling then turned into rape, stating that Taylor used a cell phone to video record her as he forcibly had sex with her.
After Taylor reportedly fell asleep, the woman said that she left the living room and called the police. She said that she also went through Taylor's backpack and found both his ID and paperwork stating that he'd recently been at a mental hospital for "seeing delusions."
Further investigation
Following her police interview, the woman was also taken to Eskenazi Hospital to complete a sexual assault exam. Officers on scene were able to locate a brown extension cord near the bed as well as a utility tool with blood on it and three cell phones.
After receiving a warrant for a suspect DNA exam, police also took Taylor to Eskenazi. During this process, detectives asked the suspect if he wanted to speak about the incident.
Court documents state that Taylor began rambling, claiming that the husband and wife owed him $12 and that they were all drinking liquid Xanax. He said he was lying on the bed eating chips when the police arrived.
Taylor reportedly admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the female victim, but he claimed that it was consensual amongst all three of them. Police said Taylor told them he recorded the sex acts and said the husband "was in the corner crying" because he "gave his old lady the business."
After this, Taylor reportedly admitted to putting the husband in a chokehold after he hit his wife. Taylor denied using an extension cord to choke the man. Taylor said the husband then apologized, said he "wasn't s**t" and that Taylor should just kill him.
Police attempted to speak with the husband in the emergency room, but he was unable to talk due to being in a neck brace and having a tube down his throat. When confronted with Taylor's version of events, the woman denied her husband being abusive and said she was in pain from the sexual assault.
Arrest and aftermath
Taylor was then arrested on charges of rape, strangulation, battery and two counts of criminal confinement. He is now being held at the Marion County Adult Detention Center on an $8,000 cash bond, jail records show.
In a follow-up interview after Taylor's arrest, police said that the husband had severe bruising on his ear, head, neck and jaw. The man also said he has been experiencing extreme headaches and memory loss since the incident. He said Taylor had also trashed their home.
Online court records show that an initial hearing in Taylor's case was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Marion Superior Court 7. During the hearing, Taylor was assigned a court-appointed attorney. Another hearing will be held next Tuesday to review bail.
