INDIANAPOLIS -- One man is dead following an early morning shooting at a home on Indy's east side. Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday on Hiner Lane near Shadeland Avenue, police were called and found 32-year-old Devon Highbaugh shot inside his own home. The victim died on the scene. The motive for his murder remained a mystery overnight. "The only thing we know for sure is that this residence or this person was targeted.  We don't know why at this present time," said IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer. During the day neighbors on the normally quiet street claim they suspected drug activity was taking place at the home, and court records show the victim was set to be sentenced next week after pleading guilty to drug charges in Hamilton County. Still, police said it is too early to know if drugs played a role in the shooting. The killing came as a surprise to neighbors because before the overnight shooting the neighborhood just north of IMPD's East District headquarters had not seen any other deadly violence this year. "Certainly it's somewhat of a quieter area, so hopefully we'll do everything we can to bring this case to a close," said IMPD Sgt. William Young. Neighbors claim there were other witnesses inside the home with the victim when the shooting took place, but they were all released after being questioned. For their part, IMPD insists this case is another example of how they need the public's help to hold whoever committed the crime accountable. "I think the community is fed up with violent crime.  We can't do it alone.  You've heard me say it numerous times," said Young.
