INDIANAPOLIS -- As they return to Washington D.C. for the last session of the 118th Congress, Indiana lawmakers are making their voices heard on some developments in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.
On Wednesday, U.S. Senator John Thune, R-South Dakota was elected as the U.S. Senate's new majority leader. This comes after retiring U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky had the top GOP job in the U.S. Senate for 18 years, according to reports from The Hill.
According to The Hill, Thune narrowly defeated U.S. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas by a vote of 25-24 in the race's second ballot, while both candidates defeated U.S. Senator Rick Scott, R-Florida in the first ballot.

"We had three outstanding candidates running for Senate Leader," Young said in a post on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. "All three are friends who put forward good ideas. Our conference moves forward united to work with the incoming Trump administration."
In a statement from U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind. District 3, the senator-elect for the state of Indiana, he said that he will look forward to working with Thune on advancing president-elect Donald Trump's agenda.
“We have a strong leadership team and our new majority is situated to hit the ground running and undo the damage of the past four years," Banks said. "I am honored that Hoosiers have entrusted me with this responsibility and I look forward to getting to work on their behalf to secure our border and bring prices down for working families in Indiana.”
Several Indiana lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives also took to social media after the GOP Conference met Wednesday morning. President-elect Donald Trump met at the House GOP Conference meeting, according to reports from The Hill, talking about several topics before he officially takes office in January.
U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym, R-Ind. District 2 said that Republicans are united under Trump and are "ready to get to work with our new president."
